Film Processing Returns to Queensland
Friday 28th Aug 2009
With the new Village Roadshow Digital Film Lab (DFL) now open for business, Queensland film makers are once again able to make a choice between film and digital. It was no coincidence that when Atlab Film Laboratories (now known as Deluxe) closed their Gold Coast based facility twelve months ago, Digital acquisition was gaining momentum and in particular 'RED' very quickly became the new buzz word. With the option to shoot on film made very difficult due to the logistics of having to ship film to Sydney for processing, many film makers had no option other than to embrace digital acquisition.
In many ways this was not necessarily a bad thing. It gave DPs the opportunity to work with digital acquisition and as such make a direct comparison to film. The feedback received from the local industry is that the majority of DPs will still choose film over digital given the choice, however there is no doubt that the RED format in particular has made an impression. It goes without saying that producers will play an integral role in the decision making process of whether to shoot film or digital on the basis that budgets will invariably influence the outcome.
The Post Lounge has worked closely with DFL to develop work flows that will make film acquisition more affordable. It particular we are now offering the option of having your film processed, scanned and supplied in file format on a removable drive. Whether you choose to edit with Final Cut Pro or Avid, we can provide your rushes on a hard drive that will allow you to simply plug 'n' play and the even better news is that the costs are very competitive!
With the freedom to choose between film and digital now an option perhaps film will make a comeback?
